When Carla and Edoardo arrived in Sovana in 1990, they started out with one hectare of vineyard, a dilapidated house, and 72 hectares of abandoned land. They worked hard, and things improved. Their first harvest was in 1997, and since then they have constantly been reworking their plans to achieve bigger and more sustainable harvests. Now they have 12 hectares of vineyards. The winery is located between the towns of Sorano and Pitigliano on the slopes of the volcanic basin of Lake Bolsena. The area’s volcanic  terrain is predominantly tufa which bestows the wines with minerals and a solid structure. Sassotondo’s wines are a beautiful expression of this powerful and mysterious landscape —sometimes considered extreme for its omnipresent tufa. The wines are elegant, naturally concentrated, flavorful, and spicy.
