Historical Background
The history of this winery begins in 1981 when Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo left his diplomatic career where he once was an Italian ambassador to the Holy See, Brussels, Moscow, and undersecretary of State of External Affairs to restore the vineyards in this ancient property. He took the abandoned land and turned it into a winery, convincing his whole family to join in and collaborate together.
Location of Vineyards
Founded in 1860, Tenuta San Michele is situated on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. It belongs to a fascinating and unique wine zone: the microclimate, mineral-rich soil, and big temperature swings due to the high altitude all contribute to the wine’s complexity and elegance.
Winemaking philosophy
In the pursuit of continuous improvement, Murgo’s wines are constantly being evaluated for ways to develop the relationship between the soil and the grapes. Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo and his sons Michele, Pietro, Matteo and Manfredi have reached important objectives in improving the soil as well as creating the first classic method sparkling wines from Nerello Mascalese. High quality Extra Virgin olive oil and other foodstuffs are also available.
