Locacation of Vineyards
For over 40 years the Colosi family has tended to their picturesque, terraced vineyards overlooking the sea. Their unique wines tell the story of light, wind, and sun. Salina island, one of the smaller islands in the Aeolian archipelago, is considered to have one of the best climates thanks to its exposure, the physiochemical makeup of the volcanic terrain, and the fact that it is the only island among the islands near the northern coast of Sicily that has kept alive its rural and agricultural traditions.
Winemaking philosophy
Located on precipitously steep slopes and micro-plots of land, these vineyards are particularly difficult to cultivate. Mediterranean espalier are tended by hand as transporting the grapes up the walled terraces is arduous. The romantic term “heroic viticulture” easily applies to this winery.
The varietals planted are typical of the Mediterranean islands. Malvasia reins supreme as the area’s most important varietal and that of the Colosi winery. Pietro and Lidia Colosi manage all aspects of the winery along with their son, Pietro, who recently graduated in oenology from San Michele all’Adige.
